As year-round residents of North Carolina, eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis) beautify our surroundings while providing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for insect pests in our lawns and gardens. Because their habitat requirements include open spaces they can be attracted to farms, rural landscapes, or suburban lawns. As cavity dwellers they will readily use artificial nest boxes, but certain design features are necessary to ensure hatchling success.
Find out what features make a good home for bluebirds, along with why it’s important to monitor nest boxes throughout the nesting cycle. Bluebird nest box monitoring can also be incorporated into a family, classroom, or homeschool Citizen Scientist Project to teach science skills while enhancing bluebird conservation.
