The YMCA of NW North Carolina has partnered with Forsyth County Animal Control’s AniMeals Program to assist low income households with the cost of maintaining pets and help keep the human and animal members of the families together. During the month of October the YMCA will be collecting pet food at their 6 locations in Forsyth County. For every pet food donation of 10 lbs. or more the YMCA will waive up to $50 off a NEW membership joining fee.
AniMeals is a program in Forsyth County inspired by a similar program offered by Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego. This program offers free pet food for the dogs and cats of elderly, disabled or lower income residents of Forsyth County. AniMeals helps keep people and their companion pets together by removing logistical and financial obstacles to ensure that clients will always be able to provide nutritious meals for their beloved pets. For many homebound individuals, a dog or cat is more than a pet; it can provide friendship, joy, and a reason for living. Studies show that animal ownership also lowers illness levels and mortality rates.
